Year 6 Transition

Firstly, I would like to take this opportunity to warmly welcome you and your son or daughter to Amery Hill School.

At this time of year we are eagerly gearing ourselves up for welcoming our new Year 7 cohort. We hope that this section of our website will allow you to start to become familiar with our wonderful school.

Moving from primary school to secondary school is an exciting time of life, but for many children it can also be a daunting prospect. A new, much bigger school can offer greater independence, however, it also means new teachers, new subjects and potentially a whole new set of friends.

We hope that the Induction Handbook provides a good starting point for your child to start to visualise life as an Amery Hill student and provide some answers to ease any concerns.

The links below to 'Be Awesome, Go Big' takes you to a package designed to help Year 6 students transition into Year 7 and also provides some useful resources for parents which you may find supportive and helpful.

You will also find a virtual tour of the school by two of our current students who walk you through the building, stopping off at key points to offer their insights (unscripted!) from a student’s perspective.

I am sure that your child is excited by the new opportunities that they are about to embark on and ready for the new challenges ahead of them. Staff here at Amery Hill are ready to welcome, support and develop your child as part of our amazing learning community.

We will be updating this area on a regular basis and hope you find this information helpful.

If you have any concerns about how your child is coping or you need any other support from the school, please let us know by emailing us on: admissions@ameryhill.school

Year 6 Induction Project - Be Awesome, Go Big

Be Awesome, Go Big is a package to help Year 6 students transition into Year 7.

It can be used by students and parents at home to motivate, provide reassurances and ensure that young people feel valued, loved, encouraged and equipped for the journey ahead.

The resources are based on bestselling children’s books You Are Awesome by Matthew Syed and Go Big: The secondary school survival guide by Matthew Burton.

Student resources include sessions focused on:

`Being Awesome`, `Making the Change`, `Bouncebackability` and `Friendships and fallouts`

Students should work through each interactive lesson, recording their answers in the accompanying workbook.

The Parent/Carer resources provide information, tips and questions to help you open up discussion with your child about the transition and help prepare them for starting secondary school.

These resources focus on:

`Building Resilience`, `Growth Mindset`, `Helping Your Child Get Into Good Habits`, `Making the Change` and `Transition into Secondary School`

We hope that you find these free resources supportive and useful.
