Attendance & Punctuality

Our Attendance Officer works with parents, students and school staff. He also works closely with Barbara Langham, Family Support Outreach Worker, to support students and families to tackle specific barriers to attendance.

As part of a variety of initiatives and interventions, and in common with other local schools, we use the RAG (Red, Amber, Green) Scheme to colour code attendance. We believe that good attendance is essential as evidence shows that there is a clear link between attendance and achievement and so colour code students based on their attendance.

The colour coded registration certificates for each student are sent out twice a year. The codes are as follows:

RED – Unacceptably low – 85% and below
AMBER – Cause for concern - 85.01% - 94.99%
GREEN – Excellent - 95% and above

In terms of punctuality, we believe that a punctual start to the day is vital. Tutor time begins promptly at 8.45am and any child not at their tutor base by this time will be marked as late.

Late arrival stops the day getting off to a good start and is a disadvantage to the child. With this in mind we have implemented a new late arrival policy. Any student arriving late should report to the front office to have their planner stamped. Students without a genuine reason for their lateness, such as the school bus arriving late, will be monitored closely. A student arriving late on three separate occasions will receive a lunchtime detention, six occasions an after school detention and nine occasions will result in the student spending time in isolation.

All students benefit from arriving on time and regular school attendance. We will do all we can to encourage parents and carers to ensure that the children in their care achieve maximum possible attendance and that any problems that prevent attendance are identified and acted on promptly.

If your child is absent from school to please call the absence line on (01420) 81301 on the first day of the absence and send a note into school with your child when they return.

Communication is vital in achieving excellent attendance, so please do not hesitate to contact your child’s tutor or our Attendance Officer to discuss any aspect of your child’s attendance. The Attendance Officer is available each school day from 8.30am-12.30pm.
