Information & Communications Technologies
What is ICT education and why is it important? Information and Communications Technologies (ICT) education is all about teaching our students valuable knowledge and skills around computing and communications devices, the software that operates them, applications that run on them and systems that are built with them.
The subject tries to address how the technology works. How students use it productively. How it is deployed, assembled, managed and maintained to create productive systems. How it is used in specific business and industry settings. What are the underlying science and technologies behind it and how it might be developed to advance ICT fields?
ICT can be complex and is constantly changing. It is so pervasive in the modern world that everyone has some understanding of it, but those understandings can be often wildly divergent.
At Amery Hill we offer a wide range of choice for students to experience numerous software packages during their study at Key Stage 3. Our main objective is to offer as much fun, challenge and variety using the latest technology available to keep the students enthused and to encourage progression. For KS3 we use Lego Robots, the Adobe Creative suite, develop coding skills and teach students how to use HTML. The students also have the chance to program BBC MicroBits.
Students who choose to study ICT at KS4 have two options: OCR Cambridge Nationals Creative iMedia course or the OCR Computing GCSE course. Both are completed over two years.
The Creative iMedia qualification equips students with the knowledge, understanding and skills they need to design and make effective digital products for others to use. The course will provide a solid foundation of creative computing such as graphic design, web design, computer game design and interactive media. The GCSE Computing course gives students a real, in-depth understanding of how computer technology works, including computer programming. The course also develops critical thinking, analysis and problem solving skills.
