Wild Inspiration: Year 9 Artists Sketch at Marwell Zoo

Posted on: September 29th 2025

Today, our Year 9 Art students enjoyed a fantastic and highly educational school trip to Marwell Zoo. The aim was to gather some first-hand inspiration for their ongoing ‘Wild Animals’ project. This excursion provided a brilliant opportunity to take their observational skills out of the classroom and into a dynamic, natural environment.

The day kicked off with a specialist observational drawing workshop led by the zoo's excellent education team. Students were given privileged, close-up access to a fascinating range of artefacts, including animal furs, skins, and skeletons.

This tactile session allowed them to study the unique textures, intricate structures, and anatomy of wild creatures. It provided a solid, academic foundation for their subsequent live sketching out in the park.

Later, surrounded by incredible wildlife, students explored the zoo, making the most of the opportunity to sketch animals in their naturalistic habitats. This demanding exercise helped them refine their skills in capturing form and movement quickly and accurately. Watching the animals allowed them to develop the spontaneous and confident approach necessary for effective field sketching.

It was a truly memorable and inspiring day of creativity. The students returned with sketchbooks full of fantastic ideas and detailed studies, which will now directly inform and elevate the quality of their 'Wild Animals' project work back in the studio. We are very much looking forward to seeing the final pieces they produce!

Year 11 Prom: A Spectacular Send-Off

On a beautifully warm evening, Audleys Wood Hotel played host to Amery Hill School's Year 11 Prom. It was a truly magical occasion from start to finish, providing a fitting tribute to a group of remarkable students who have navigated their secondary education with such vibrant spirit, resilience, and determination. Despite the summer heat, our students arrived determined to celebrate in style! The red-carpet arrivals were a spectacle, with students making grand entrances in everything from tractors to sports cars, reflecting their vibrant personalities. Everyone certainly dressed to impress, and the students went to amazing lengths with their sharp suits and stunning dresses; they looked absolutely magnificent. Inside the venue, the atmosphere was simply electric. The evening was packed with special entertainment, a delicious summer buffet, moving speeches, a mind-boggling magician, a photo booth packed with props, and a much-welcomed ice cream station to keep everyone cool. The energy peaked on the dance floor, which quickly became the heart of the celebration as students and staff thoroughly enjoyed themselves dancing to the DJ alongside a fantastic live performance by our increasingly popular staff band. Speaking about the success of the celebration, Mr Board, Progress Leader, commented: "All the students and staff thoroughly enjoyed themselves and it was the perfect way to send the Year 11 students on to the next stage of their journey. You have been an amazing year group and everyone at Amery Hill wishes you all the very best in the future!" With heartfelt goodbyes, it was the perfect finale to their time at Amery Hill during an unforgettable night where lasting friendships were celebrated and cherished memories were made. Amery Hill School is incredibly proud of all that these young people have achieved, not just academically, but in how they have grown into such inspiring, well-rounded individuals. As our students now move on to their next exciting adventures, whether that is further education, apprenticeships, or embarking on unique new paths, everyone at the school wishes them the best of luck. We know they are destined for great things. Good luck, Year 11, you have been absolutely brilliant! Click here to view our full gallery of photos from the evening. View Article
